Historical Background Of Gilgit Baltistan
Gilgit Baltistan, historically identified as the Northern Areas, is Pakistan’s most northern administrative region. It is bounded to the south by Azad Kashmir, to the west by the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to the north by the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan, to the east and northeast by China’s Xinjiang zone, and the southeast by the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Gilgit-Baltistan, along with Azad Kashmir, Aksai Chin, the Shaksgam Valley, Jammu, Ladakh, and the Valley of Kashmir, is part of the contested Kashmir zone between India and Pakistan. In 1970, the jurisdiction of modern-day Gilgit-Baltistan was designated as a distinct administrative entity known as “Northern Areas.”
The former Gilgit Agency, the Baltistan district, and several small former princely states, the largest of Hunza and Nagar, merged to create it. The Self-Governance Order signed by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in 2009 gave it minimal autonomy and changed its name to Gilgit-Baltistan, intending to empower the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
